Would FLEX Work for Our Family?

What should we know before considering FLEX?

Who can enroll in FLEX Online?

Currently, any student in the Beaverton School District may enroll at FLEX. Open enrollments for our school occur at two times: in the summer and at the start of second semester.

If you want to transfer to FLEX from another BSD School, you need to complete an Administrative Transfer Request from your home school and meet the definition of a “hardship” that necessitates transfer.

Students new to the Beaverton School District may enroll at any time of the year.

Will my student feel like they belong at FLEX?

At FLEX, we are proud of our incredibly diverse student population. Every student has their own story about why they joined us. Some face health challenges or anxiety, while others need a flexible schedule for sports or other activities. No matter the reason, our strength rests in our differences.

Our motto says it best: "We are unique, just like you. You belong here.”

What are the benefits of attending FLEX?

It’s all in our name. FLEX provides FLEXibility for families and their student’s education. This looks like:

  • Flexible schedules: Learn at your own pace, great for jobs, health needs, family duties, or sports/arts
  • More course options: Take advanced or unique classes not offered at regular schools
  • Personalized learning: Go faster or get extra help when needed
  • Builds real-world skills: Learn time management, independence, and digital tools

Our online environment removes learning barriers for some of our students:

  • Safer environment: Safer option for students facing bullying, anxiety, or health issues that prevent students from accessing their education
  • More focused learning: Fewer social pressures and distractions while learning in class
  • Remote learning: Families living within our district boundary can learn from anywhere they need.

Is FLEX a good fit for all students?

While our online format allows students to learn when and where they want, FLEX Online School isn’t for everyone. Why?

  • Our format is more challenging than the traditional model because it requires students to be more independent and active in their education
  •  It also requires a commitment of support at home to make sure students are regularly attending and submitting their assignments. Our teachers cannot easily monitor students to make sure they complete work in a timely manner.
  • Attendance is based on submitting work, not just showing up to classes.

Successful online students are:

  • Excited to learn and interested in their classes
  • Comfortable communicating with teachers and asking for help when needed
  • Skilled readers with developing comprehension skills
  • Becoming skilled writers that can express themselves and their ideas
  • Becoming more independent with support
  • Able to stay organized and manage their time
  • Committed to developing self-discipline

Families need to be able to provide the following:

  • Fast, reliable internet
  • A quiet space for learning
  • Daily support from a Learning Coach
  • Regular time with friends or activities (social activities outside of school)

I’ve heard the term “Learning Coach”. What is that?

A Learning Coach is an adult at home who helps students stay on track with their FLEX schoolwork. Since teachers can’t monitor students in person, the Learning Coach plays a key role.

What is the average time commitment for a Learning Coach?
